Construction of the inlet and outlet lines to the new desalination plant in Torrevieja through the district of San Roque severely affected urban infrastructures. In compensation for the inconvenience caused to residents and commercial outlets, this project not only proposed to replace these infrastructures, but also to undertake complete urban redevelopment of the district (renovation of footpaths and roadways, street furniture, road signs and public lighting) with the priority of achieving the complete pedestrian accessibility. The introduction of latest-generation LED light fittings and a suitable system of remote management in public lighting, almost met Torrevieja Council’s objective of encouraging energy efficiency and saving in the municipal area.
